3 Wallet-Friendly Ways to Update Your Apartment
For many of us, the festive season occurs in a blur of insane deadlines, endless wrapping paper, obscene amounts of calories and obscure family arguments. When the New Year rings in, we’re generally looking for a fresh start.
One of the most satisfying ways to put a pep in your step this New Year is to update your living space. This isn’t always easy on a tight budget, but we’ve got that covered with our three best ways to brighten, lighten and love on your apartment.
Never underestimate the power of paint
A tin of paint can magically transform your space. Whether it’s with colour or simply neatening up some old shelves, this is probably one of the simplest and most affordable options for you.
- Repaint old and yellowing outlets or light switch plates, bathtubs or curtain rails so that they are white again
- Consider an accent wall. Find an area in your apartment that has no windows or doors, and paint it one solid colour. This works best in homes where the surrounding spaces are in light or neutral shades, but the options are endless. If you’re renting, you may have some charming to do, so consider baking your landlord some muffins and promising them that if they don’t like it, you’ll change it back when you move out (worked for me!)
- SPLURGE! Sand, prime and repaint your front door. This requires a little more time and effort, but the results will speak for themselves. Just remember that if your front door faces the elements, you’ll need to use an exterior paintNeed more inspiration? Visit Paintsmiths online, or pop in, for some great ideas!
Update your nooks
Prettying-up the little spaces in your apartment will bring you heaps of joy!
- Tidy up windowsills and keep them clutter-free
- Add a lively plant to a corner, a tabletop or a bookshelf. Plantr have some stunning options, and they’re also super helpful if you have any questions about what type of plant would suit your space perfectly
- SPLURGE! Add a unique lamp to a corner as a focal point in a room. Check out Maxim for options that add a dash of drama to a drab space
Revitalise a space with colour
If your flat or room needs a little more personality, consider adding a pop of rich colour to its palette.
- Go through your crockery and see if you have any bold pieces (like a beautiful bowl, vase or milk jug) which could add the dash of cheer you’re looking for. Place it in an area that’s in direct line of sight of the front door for maximum effect. Got nothing? Pop in to Fani Ceramic Design at The Palms for brilliant local pieces
- Buy some canvas and cheap acrylic paint and get creative! Yes, you! Look at your space and think about what colour would bring joy, and what would work for your personality. Paint the whole canvas this colour, or use a range of colours you know would look beautiful together, and hang it in a prime spot
- SPLURGE! Visit your nearest and dearest home décor store and buy a printed cushion or a soft throw to chuck on the couch – effortless! Plus, if you’re really looking for a New Year spoil for yourself, nothing says ‘I love you’ like Egyptian Cotton! Check out Whitehouse for some luxurious options
