Modern Street Art in Historic Woodstock

In the heart of colourful Cape Town, you’ll find many things, but passé art is not one of them. The first city in Africa to be named a Creative City of Design by UNESCO and crowned the World Design Capital by the ICSID in 2014, the Mother City is renowned for its outstanding innovation in design and its ambitious art culture.

To celebrate this heritage, The Palms Décor and Lifestyle Centre recently collaborated with local street art platform, Baz-Art to use its outside walls as a canvas. Already an architectural gem and a historical landmark, the aesthetic of the building is dramatically elevated and is a must-see for locals and tourists alike.

For this project, Tilmans combined strong, geometric shapes with bold colours to create striking murals that are much like Cape Town’s people and its landscape. He uses the alluring motif of marine life to express that no matter how modern we are, the care of nature should be considered in everything we do – apt considering how environmental awareness is such a hot topic right now.

This is not the first time that historical Woodstock is seeing it streets uplifted with arresting artwork. Artists have played a big role in this complex suburb’s transformation over the years, painting walls with entrancing imagery that captures its tumultuous past and its bright future. Amongst the hustle and bustle of vendors, merchants and creatives on-the-go, you’ll find outstanding murals decorating timeless architecture everywhere.

In line with this proud heritage and with its reputation as being something of a design mecca, The Palms is also home to the SMAC Gallery – a unique space for art aficionados and newbies alike to take in the local talent in a less conventional setting. As you can tell, creativity in all its forms is truly celebrated here.

If you’re looking for something a little different to do in Cape Town, why not join one of Juma Art Tours’ daily free walking tours, bargain hunt or enjoy a delicious brew from one of South Africa’s best coffee roasteries? You could also have a cheeky day out and enjoy all of the above! On your way around, pop into The Palms and take in the scenery – with vibrant Woodstock as a backdrop and incredible creativity on display, you won’t be disappointed.
